This video is about the exponencial growth of available information in our society and what might happen in the future (thanks Doug). The video is a 2008 remastered version of the original 2006 presentation by Karl Fisch:
So what does it mean?
Coincidentally, I also received this today:
Iowa Workforce Development Uses Screen-Scraper to Enhance Job Search
Provo, Utah, October 27, 2008 – The Iowa agency that helps match potential employees with employers has greatly improved their offering recently by using web data extraction technology. By using screen-scraping, which involves pulling information off web sites to be used in other contexts, the state of Iowa has significantly increased their job bank by tens of thousands, reduced costs for potential employers, and targeted employment opportunities demanding higher-end salaries.
Here’s what it means – hyper competition! If you run a job board or any other website for that matter, competitors are coming at you from every direction… every once in a while a recession will come along and put some of your competitors out of business. But others will be launched during the recession when talented people lose their jobs and decide not to go back to corporate America.
The real question is not ‘what does it mean?’ but rather ‘what should we do?’
The answer is, do whatever it takes to build a lasting competitive advantage… whatever is necessary to be unique, to provide value and to stand apart from the masses that want to take away your customers!
It also means embracing authenticity, blogging, developing category killer domains, using the right tools, hiring wherever you need to and constant learning.
